Indian Independence Day: History The year 1757 marked the beginning of British rule in India, which was followed by the victory of the English East India Company in the Battle of Plassey and gained control of the country. The East India Company ruled India for about 100 years and was then replaced by the British Crown in 1857–58 through the Indian Mutiny. During the First World War, the Indian independence movement was launched which was led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Gandhiji advocated the method of non-violence and non-cooperation movement which later took the form of civil disobedience movement.
During the Second World War, the British government suffered heavy financial losses, after which in 1946 the British government considered ending its rule over India. In early 1947, the British government announced that they would transfer all power to all Indians by June 1948.
In June 1947, many leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Abul Kalam Azad, BR Ambedkar agreed for the partition of India. Millions of people from different religious groups started looking for places to reside. Between 250,000 and 500,000 people died during the partition. India got independence at midnight on August 15, 1947 and was concluded by Jawaharlal Nehru's speech "Try with luck".
What is Indian Independence Act 1947? On February 20, 1947, British Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced that British rule in India would end by June 30, 1948, after which the powers would be handed over to responsible Indian hands. This announcement was followed by an agitation by the Muslim League and the demand for the partition of the country. Then, on June 3, 1947, the British government declared that the constitutions of the Indian Constituent Assembly, formed in 1946, could not apply to those parts of the country that were not willing to accept it.
On June 3, 1947, Lord Mountbatten, the Viceroy of India put forward the Partition Plan, known as the Mountbatten Plan. The Congress and the Muslim League accepted the plan. The plan that invoked the Indian Independence Act 1947 was given immediate effect. On the midnight of August 14–15, 1947, British rule ended, and power was transferred to the two newly independent Dominions of India and Pakistan. Lord Mountbatten became the first Governor-General of the new Dominion of India.
Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of independent India. The Constituent Assembly established in 1946 became the Parliament of the Indian Sovereign.
